AMD Briefly Slashes Vega 56 Prices Ahead of Expected 1660 Ti Launch

AMD has temporarily slashed the price of its Vega 56 — or at least one Vega 56 model — ahead of Nvidia’s next mainstream GPU launches, cutting the GPU down to $ 280. The new move could bring the older card back into competition in terms of overall performance, though it also puts sharp pressure on AMD’s recently-released RX 590.

For the past few months, there’s been a decided gap between AMD’s competition around the $ 200 price point and its performance above that mark. At and around $ 200, AMD has a very strong position. The RX 570 is available for as little as $ 139, where it annihilates the GTX 1050 Ti. Seriously. There is no competition between the RX 570 and the GTX 1050 Ti at the $ 140 price point. The RX 580SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce, at $ 190 for an 8GB card, is positioned fairly well against the GTX 1060 (currently there’s a single 6GB Zotac GTX 1060 on Newegg for $ 200, while the next-cheapest is an MSI model for $ 240). Assuming that the Zotac is a temporary outlier, the $ 50 advantage for the RX 580 seals our recommendation in that segment as well.

But above the $ 200 price point, AMD has had less to work with. The RX 590SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce is a decided win over the 1060 (though power consumption is much higher), but it’s been stuck up at an unappealing $ 280 price point. Vega 56 and 64 have been higher on the whole, at or above $ 300 and $ 400 respectively. Vega 64 prices have actually increased — the GPU is currently $ 500 — but the Vega 56 has dropped to $ 280, at least in theory. We say “in theory,” because the cheapest GPU at Newegg is currently a $ 400 card listed as being on sale, and the specific link that AMD sent us to the GPU that’s supposed to be cheaper has the card on Auto Notify as of this writing.

We’re not going to speculate much on how Vega 56SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce will perform in this position because we haven’t seen how the 1660 Ti will fare. Presumably AMD picked a price point that the GPU could actually compete at to start with. What’s less clear is what impact this will have on the RX 590. A price cut to that GPU — say, down to $ 230 or so — would position it much more effectively against both the Vega 56 and the older RX 580.

AMD isn’t expected to launch any lower-end relatives to the Radeon VII, which means the company’s product stack is probably largely set until it releases Navi later this year. Anyone who buys a Vega 56 will also receive a coupon for three games: Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5, and The Division 2. And even if the deal is good,
