Jets trade Sheldon Richardson to Seahawks for WR Jermaine Kearse

In a Friday stunner, Sheldon Richardson is no longer a Jet.

The Daily News has confirmed, via a source, that Gang Green has traded the defensive lineman to the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse.

The Jets are also getting the Seahawks’ 2018 second-round pick. The two teams will swap 7th-round picks as part of the deal.

Richardson, the 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowler in 2014, played out of position with the Jets last season and finished with a career-low 1.5 sacks. For his career, the 6-3, 294 Richardson has 18 sacks and 142 tackles.

Kearse, a five-year veteran, had 41 catches for 510 yards last season with the Seahawks, but just one touchdown. In five seasons in Seattle, Kearse has 153 catches for 2,109 yards and 11 TDs. His career per-catch average is 13.8 yards per catch.

The Jets had a big need at the receiver spot as the team parted ways with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker in the offseason and then lost Quincy Enunwa to a neck injury in early August. Before Friday’s trade, second-year WR Robby Anderson was the top receiver on the roster.

As the Daily News reported last month, Jets GM Mike Maccagnan seriously entertained trade offers for Richardson during the draft. Sources told the News’ Manish Mehta that teams tried to low-ball the Jets to land the former Pro Bowl defensive lineman.

Richardson is due $ 8.1 million guaranteed in 2017 as part of a fifth-year option.

The former Missouri product has had a couple off-field transgressions during his time with the Jets including a failed marijuana test and a high-speed chase that led to his arrest in 2015. He reached a plea deal after being clocked driving 143 mph in a high-speed road race in Missouri and avoided prison. He was suspended the first four games of the 2015 season for the pot use.

Richardson also feuded with Marshall during the Jets’ miserable 5-11 campaign last year, saying the wide receiver quit on Gang Green. Marshall signed with the Giants as a free agent in the offseason but Richardson continued to throw verbal jabs at Marshall during training camp.
